IT’S SPRING AGAIN

by Elspeth

This is the time of year when the streets of Washington DC turn shades of pink and white, a glorious phenomenon marked by The National Cherry Blossom Festival which, traditionally, marks the first day of spring.  This year’s festival began on 20th March and, for three weeks, locals and visitors can enjoy all manner of exciting events, including fireworks displays, a stylish Pink Tie Party fundraiser, a parade and a kite festival.  2015 is the 103rd anniversary of the gift of cherry trees from the people of Tokyo to the people of Washington and, this year, iconic buildings and transportation hubs will turn pink in celebration.

The Bears in the Windows are celebrating the arrival of spring for a second year and, given DC’s long association with giant pandas, it’s appropriate that several black and white bears are taking centre stage.

by Elspeth

Ireland retained their Six Nations crown in thrilling style this afternoon, their first back-to-back win in 66 years, when they snatched the title from England, making it possibly the greatest single day in the history of the tournament .  By defeating Scotland by 40 points to 10, they also ensured that the home nation suffered the ignomy of winning the wooden spoon!  There have been many memorable matches played at Murrayfield, which is 90 years old today but, unfortunately, today’s was definitely not one of them, at least not for the Scottish fans!

Being the sporting nation that they are, the Irish members of The Bears in the Windows family insisted that the Scottish captain appeared in a group photo complete with his wooden spoon!

HAPPY ST PATRICK’S DAY

by Elspeth

4) ST PATRICK'S DAY (BITW)

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind always be at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

And rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

MY FATHER’S OWN INDIAN SUMMERS

by Elspeth

MY FATHER'S OWN INDIAN SUMMERS

When the Bears heard I was writing a feature for The Lady about my father’s experiences in Simla during the war, they insisted there should be a window dedicated to him.  My father is represented by a little bear, proudly wearing the MBE he was awarded in the 1946 New Year’s Honours List, the Elysium Hill, where he lived and worked, behind him.  Add to that two sari-clad beauties and an assortment of Indian soldiers, elephants and even a camel, and you’re transported back to the Simla of the 1940s.

ODE TO HOLLY

 With your melting brown eyes

And silky black ears,

You lit up our lives

For nearly nine years.

The first time I saw you,

I knew you were the one,

The dog I’d so yearned for,

Face bright as the sun.

Best friends for all time,

Can’t bear to say goodbye,

But memories last forever,

They never ever die.

We’ll never forget you,

Your eyes shining bright,

You’re with us forever,

Dear Hollydog, sleep tight.
