Holocaust Memorial Day

70 years ago today, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp of the Second World War, was liberated.  Of the six million Jews who perished in this unparalleled human tragedy, approximately one and a half million were children. Visiting Yad Vashem in Jerusalem and the Holocaust Museum in Washington were heart-rending experiences I will never forget.

Of all the words written about this act of evil unique in history, the most moving for me are those scratched on the wall of a cellar in Cologne where some Jews had been hiding:

‘I believe in the sun, even when it’s not shining.

I believe in love, even I don’t feel it.

I believe in God, even when He is silent.’

We must remember all those who perished and also those who survived not just today, but tomorrow and forever.
